Omnyx The Future of Pathology
Technological innovation is revolutionizing the 100-year-old manual practice of pathology.
Omnyx, a scanning technology that digitizes pathology slides, will allow pathologists and physicians anywhere to review images and collaborate.
GE Healthcare formed Omnyx, a joint-venture company, with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) to build an innovative product that would change the way pathologists analyze images, collaborate on slide review and manage their workflow processes.
“An integrated digital pathology solution will ultimately allow pathologists to quickly share cases with the click of a button, increasing collaboration among peers and access for rural hospitals.”
— Dr. George Michalopoulos, M.D., Ph.D., Chairman of the Department of Pathology, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center
Omnyx studied the activities, habits and processes of pathologists to create and refine an integrated digital pathology system to automate the time-intensive manual processes still used in pathology labs today, and to help address the global shortage of pathologists.
Omnyx also has the potential to improve coordination between silos of care in specialty areas such as oncology. The connections between the radiologist, research pathologist and oncologist, for example, can be strengthened by collaborating more closely and bringing together information that today is disparate and sometimes unconnected.
Omnyx software has already been installed at 4 beta sites in North America. Those include UPMC, Montefiore Medical Center, Stanford and University Health Network (UHN) in Toronto Canada. Pathologist-in-Chief Sylvia Asa observed, “At the University Health Network, in addition to being more efficient, we will be able to collaborate in new ways, which will be exciting for our doctors and good for our patients, who deserve the same level of medical care, regardless of their location.”
Omnyx products are for research only. Not for use in diagnostic procedures.
