Validation
Value Creation
Healthymagination rests on evidence-based innovation. That’s more than a headline. It’s a fundamental operating principle that determines which technologies and solutions healthymagination will support to meet unmet healthcare needs globally. GE Healthcare Systems has enacted a new process, known as value creation, which guides the entire development-through-launch process:
- New development is based on unmet customer and patient needs
- Evidence informs in-country, for-country innovations
- Evidence further determines go-to-market strategies, with funding focused on those products and services that meet healthymagination criteria
How healthymagination Validates Products and Services
To ensure rigor and accountability, GE has engaged Oxford Analytica, an independent third-party assessment firm, to validate evidence based on healthymagination’s target objective: lowering cost, increasing access and improving quality, each by 15 percent by the year 2015.
Healthymagination validation and scores are dependent, to a large extent, on the robustness and quality of the data presented. Submissions will be rejected if the supporting evidence does not meet the validation criteria. Healthymagination products can be resubmitted for validation to Oxford Analytica as more data becomes available.
The validation process parallels that of academic publication in peer-reviewed journals: scientific evidence is submitted for external review by multiple leading experts who independently evaluate the strength and validity of the data. Only innovations with strong scientific and economic evidence demonstrating the product-specific ability to meet a defined unmet need are validated.
Oxford Analytica Validation Steps:
- 1 healthymagination council selects innovation
- 2 evidence submitted
- 3 experts review submission claims
- 4 innovation validated
Cost
Target:
Lowering Cost
- decreased treatment times
- reduced unnecessary interventions
- shorter length of hospital stays
- lower administration costs
Quality
Target:
Improving Quality
- use of established and proven technologies
- new technologies that show potential or actual outperformance over existing available products
Access
Target:
Increasing Access
- providing medical equipment to developing and rural markets where distance from healthcare centers can be a significant obstacle
- offering medical technologies that can be operated directly in primary care settings, reducing the need for hospital referrals
Where Value Creation and Validation Have Taken Us
In total, 43 innovations have now been validated, enabling GE to touch more than 234 million lives through 2010.
Awareness and acceptance of healthymagination as a differentiating business strategy is growing; survey respondents have indicated that they are more likely to buy products and solutions that have been healthymagination validated. Clinicians further reported that the rationale for why specific products had been validated was both reasonable and compelling; 80 percent of those surveyed indicated the validation status of one product increased their interest in evaluating other healthymagination-validated products.
In 2010, healthymagination value creation and validation became part of the normal operating rhythm of GE Healthcare, becoming incorporated into early business planning to guide the full continuum of technology and solution development.
