Speed Dating for Doctors

Whatever method you used to find your current doctor, we’re guessing it wasn’t through speed dating. But a hospital in Texas is doing just that with their recently launched “Doc Shop.” The event parallels speed dating, except the aspiring duo takes the form of a patient and doctor. Prospective patients are able to spend a few minutes getting to know a variety of medical practitioners in a one-on-one setting.

The process, like speed dating, relies on gut reactions and first impressions. You may not be able to learn a lot about a doctor (or patient) in that short time frame, but it does allow for a face-to-face visit, something that rarely happens if you’re relying on referrals or don’t have time to do a detailed search.

Dr. Manisha Parikh, quoted in this CNN article, says, “There’s a new attitude in medicine where patients want to feel like their doctor is their friend. They truly want to be listened to.”

You should always do your homework before selecting a doctor, and this is a unique way of doing so. A five-minute conversation obviously has its limitations, but this set-up would allow you to meet a number of doctors
within an hour or less.

Would you find being able to talk to a number of doctors at once, even for a few minutes, helpful in making your decision?
