To mark the recent release of healthymagination’s first annual report, this week we’ll be hearing from prominent members of the healthymagination advisory board about our progress and challenges ahead. Today’s excerpt comes from Newt Gingrich, the former Speaker on the House, author of numerous books and founder of the Center for Health Transformation.
Healthymagination’s mission is straightforward: Better health at lower costs for more people around the world. This has been an elusive goal, but one that can be met. To achieve this healthymagination starts at the right place: a clear focus on improving individual health. Nearly every problem we face could be solved if individuals improved their health, from prevention, wellness, and early detection to avoiding—or at least controlling—chronic disease. This can be accomplished through closer relationships with physicians, better education and understanding, access to preventive medicine, and through wellness programs that reward healthy living.
We must also create a culture of health that encourages more responsible individual choices. We can accomplish this through innovative approaches in both public and private institutions. From worksite wellness programs to healthier food choices in schools, community leaders can help make health a priority for everyone. Healthymagination is doing that in communities like Cincinnati, where GE is helping lead a group of businesses to focus on treating and hopefully preventing certain chronic diseases, like diabetes.
Even with the best preventive care, nearly all of us will enter the healthcare system at some point. When that happens we must ensure that every individual has access to the best quality care. We can do that by moving healthcare into the 21st century where every provider uses electronic health records, breakthrough diagnostics, and the latest in imaging technology. These tools help prevent medical errors and allow physicians, nurses, and other providers to make better, more informed decisions. Automating cumbersome, manual processes streamlines workflow, eliminates inefficiencies, and lowers costs. This is why GE, one of the most innovative and dynamic companies in the world, has made technology a cornerstone of healthymagination.
When you combine a community-wide focus on individual health and wellness with the world’s most cutting-edge technologies, you get healthymagination. GE should be applauded for its bold leadership in tackling one of the biggest and most important challenges we face. The breadth of its reach and the depth of its impact will help accomplish its mission of transforming health and healthcare.
