This intelligent barcode works like the average scannable variety, except that the label progressively fades with time. So instead of using subjective methods of ascertaining how fresh your cabbage is, you can refer to the label’s percentage chart and know whether to eat or discard it. And if the barcode has disappeared to the point you’re no longer able to scan it at the checkout, it’s a helpful reminder that your product is past the point you should be eating it in the first place.

An even more elaborate tool was invented for the Cravendale milk company to ensure customers never drink their signature beverage after it has gone sour. Developed by Oliver Newberry, this milk jug is fit with a pH sensor that charts the acidity of the milk. If that level crosses a certain threshold, the digital display goes from “Fresh” to “Sour,” at which point you can dispose of it without having to hazard a pungent sniff.

While both these products are helpful in avoiding rotten milk or produce, they also help to reinforce the importance of always opting for the freshest products. Do you use any creative methods to ensure your food’s freshness?
