Attention all designers, developers and students: the submission period for the first ever Apps for Healthy Kids competition has begun, and $60,000 in prizes are waiting to be handed out. A part of First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move!” campaign to end to childhood obesity, the USDA-sponsored competition is looking for engaging software tools and games that promote healthy eating and physical activity in fun and interesting ways.
To get involved, just download the USDA nutrition dataset and think up a creative and original way to help motivate kids with it. A panel of experts – including Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak and Healthymagnination’s own Michael J. Barber – will take a look at your entries and pick out the very best. In all, they’ll choose five winners in both the “games” and “tools” category, with the Grand Prize and Healthymagination’s Student Award winners taking home $10,000 each.
And you don’t have to be a health or technology expert to have your voice heard: from July 14th to August 14th, the public can view and vote on all the applications to pick the Popular Choice Winners. Visit the Apps for Healthy Kids site for more information, and start working on your app before the June 30th submission cut-off. Good luck!
